NDEI.org,
the official website of The National Diabetes Education Initiative®
(NDEI®), published a webcast on the results of the ORIGIN trial
featuring expert commentary from Vivian A. Fonseca, MD. “These results
may help us to education our patients on the futility of adding omega-3
fatty acids in the hope of added benefit, in the absence of data
supporting their use,” said Dr Fonseca, a Professor of Medicine and
Pharmacology, and Chief of the Section of Endocrinology at Tulane
University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.
In
this exclusive educational webcast, Dr Fonseca addresses the null result
of cardiovascular event reduction in the omega-3 fatty acid arm of the
ORIGIN trial. In a 2 by 2 factorial design, ORIGIN (Outcome Reduction
with Initial Glargine Intervention) investigated the effects of basal
insulin glargine and daily supplementation with omega-3 fatty acid ethyl
esters on cardiovascular event reduction among individuals with
dysglycemia who had evidence of cardiovascular disease. Results were
released and simultaneously published during the American Diabetes
Association 72nd Scientific Sessions in Philadelphia in June 2012.
Dr
Fonseca is a member of the esteemed NDEI Education Council. NDEI is a
multi-component educational initiative addressing issues spanning the
diabetes continuum, from epidemiology and pathophysiology of the disease
and its associated complications and comorbidities, to the therapeutic
options for prevention and treatment. Launched in 1996, NDEI is
sponsored by KnowledgePoint360.
